I was sitting across the street from this image in mid-town NYC. I was so taken with its state of decay  against the beautiful yellow wall, which seemed quite delicate to me. A flying cow I thought to myself or  a flying dog – Mercury? Likely some common, seemingly Japanese cartoon image I am unfamiliar with, but maybe not. My husband is a muralist and so  I tend to photograph them in general wherever I travel to, stopping on roadsides as well to photograph barn paintings. In this case it is not clear if this was an old advertisement or a posted mural and just what animal was central to its composition. Regardless, the solo tree limbs cutting across the relic reminded me of every civilization’s historic remains and why my husband says, from personal experience, that public art outside is the worst art to create for the long run but it can tell a great story for a little while.
